Susie Burpee has been a part of Canadian contemporary dance since her studies at the professional program of Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers in her hometown. She was a company dancer with the critically acclaimed Dancemakers (Toronto), Le Groupe Dance Lab (Ottawa), and Ruth Cansfield Dance (Winnipeg). As an independent artist, she continues to work closely with innovative choreographers Serge Bennathan, Sasha Ivanochko, Lesandra Dodson, and Tedd Robinson. As a choreographer, Ms.Burpee creates works that showcase ‘fully human characters, struggling for connection’ (The Toronto Star). She has been awarded Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Outstanding Performance and Outstanding New Choreography, and in 2006, she received the K.M. Hunter Artist Award for Dance. Upcoming projects include a new creation with musical collaborator Christine Fellows, and dancing in Tedd Robinson’s new work. Ms. Burpee teaches professional technique classes and workshops that facilitate creation. She also acts as outside eye and rehearsal director for the creative process and will intern in dramaturgy in 2009.
